Make It Fresh: How To Shake Up Your Home Decor

September 16 2020 – Jayne Graham

Our homes should be a place of comfort. After a long day, you want to come home and feel welcomed by the familiar. Familiarity is great, but sometimes it can start feeling a bit stale.

Anyone know what I’m talking about?

We want our homes to be comfortable, but sometimes it feels good to shake things up a bit. If you’ve found yourself in a rut with your decor, I’ve been there. You want to have the feeling of freshness without knocking down walls, repainting the entire house or spending a fortune!

Sometimes all it takes is introducing a few new accessories and design elements. You don’t have to fork out lots of money to make a dramatic difference and reconnect with your home.

In this post, I want to introduce you to four home decor accessories that I have used to help me shake things up and feel inspired again in my own home. These items are affordable and stylish, and will give you the opportunity to have fun and get playful.

I’ll also introduce you to my favourite brands who are offering something new and different. They're my favourite because they each have a strong ethos and sense of style that will bring warmth and beauty to your home. If you love to accessorise with brands that stand for something, I know you’ll love them too.

Ready to shake things up? Let’s go!

Rugs are a great way to make a dramatic change by introducing just one item. Whether you want something minimalist and chic or a piece of artwork for your floor, a rug can tie the room together in interesting ways. If you’re feeling blah about a room, a rug is the perfect way to give it a boost. Choose something that’ll complement the other elements of your room or get creative and make it pop!

Rugs by Ohh

Our favourite pick for rugs is the range from Oh Happy Home, aka Ohh. Beautifully designed and ethically made, their rugs bring a touch of magic.

Ohh rugs are available in many sizes, colours and textures. From large earthy designs to simple woven cotton floor rugs, Ohh knows how to make pieces that impress. What makes them really stand out? Their commitment to ethical design and manufacturing. Ohh rugs are produced in small batches at a time, designed in Australia and ethically woven in India and Nepal.

Cushions & Throws by Pony Rider

I love cushions! They’re such an easy way to make a statement, and they’re easy to move around whenever you want to change things up. You could think of cushions like the cherry on top of the rest of your room’s decor. They complete the look. And if you’re feeling a bit ho-hum about your room, a cushion can bring the pop of colour and texture you need to reinvent it.

Mixing patterns, textures and sizes is a great way to create a fun, modern look. Have fun with placement. Try putting your cushions neatly in the corners of your couch, spread out playfully across the middle or propped attractively on an armchair. If you get tired of the placement, you can change it up whenever you want. That’s the beauty of cushions!

Our favourite brand for cushions and throws is Pony Rider. Their designs are fun and unique, with interesting textures and great colour combos.

If you’re looking for something new and exclusive to shake up your home decor, Pony Rider releases bespoke limited collections as well as their staple collections. All their cushions are designed in Australia and sourced by local and global artisans.

Candles by The Commonfolk

Candles are one of the most cost effective ways to style a room and add atmosphere. Since candles are products that can be used and replaced, it gives you a chance to change up the look regularly. Candles are easy to move around and relocate whenever you want to add something new to different areas around the home.

I love including candles throughout my home because it adds much more to the room than just looking good. It also creates mood and atmosphere. If your home feels a little drab, the fragrances and warmth of a candle can help renew the atmosphere.

Our favourite candles are by The Commonfolk. If you like candles but want something a little different, The Commonfolk candles are the perfect way to add beauty, personality and a scrumptious fragrance. They are made in Australia from pure soy and coconut wax with no nasty chemicals or toxins.

The range of fragrances are divine, and the designs on the candle jars are a beautiful element. Whether you’re drawn to inspiring quotes or nostalgic photos, these candles are a great way to add a touch of personality. The jars can also be repurposed after you’ve finished the candle. They make the perfect holders for pens, tea bags and toothbrushes.

Lotions by Al.ive Body

Bathrooms and kitchens are often difficult to decorate as they’re highly functional spaces. The good news is, you can style with lotions! An attractive lotion bottle is actually an inexpensive way to add a point of interest and a flash of colour. Once you finish the lotion, you can replace it with something new. It’s a simple but impactful way to freshen up your bathroom or kitchen look.

Our personal favourite lotion brand to style with is Al.ive Body . Their range of personal body care products smell fantastic and feel like luxury on your skin. Al.ive Body products are vegan, 100% palm oil free and made from the dream combo of essential body oils and native botanical extracts.

From a design perspective, the packaging is on point. It offers a spot of luxe and a flash of sexy colour. Actually, Al.ive Body was created by design duo Alisa and Lysandra Fraser who couldn’t find bathroom styling products that were both fantastic to use and beautiful to look at. We’re so glad they made Al.ive Body to fill the gap.

How will you shake up the decor at your home?

I hope you found some inspiration in this post. Wishing you all the best as you shake up your decor and reconnect with your home.

Happy styling!
