Rattan, woven weave, wicker and chunky timbers are all the buzz words that are used to describe the hot outdoor living trend right now! I continue to get enquiries regarding rattan outdoor furniture, and you can see the trend on social media isn’t going anywhere! When I think of these materials, I immediately think coastal, chilled out vibe and the best part is that they are also natural and durable which means practical and sustainable.
Rattan also brings an element on vintage which is also super popular right now! I also think it is a trend that will be sustainable and not date for many years, I mean come on, how long as rattan been around? I loved my papasan chair that I saved up for months to buy when I was 15, I wonder where it is now?
The best thing about products made with these materials is that they go with everything! Combine teak timber outdoor furniture pieces or stunning brass metal planters with your rattan and you have some great looking outdoor spaces. The trick these days for our outdoor living spaces is to link the indoors and using outdoor furniture with these materials can help do just that.
In my design book I have always ensured cozy and comfy comes first along with style. Functional and relaxed retreat are other words I would use to describe my outdoor living priorities. Adding your own personality to the area is a must, so whether that be simplistic or colourful these can both be achieved.
Some of my favourite rattan or woven pieces for outdoor living from our range include the below.
Hanging Chair by Cranmore Home & Co. - This must be the bohemian in me, the hidden gypsy princess as I love hanging chairs. I love the look and just the thought of swinging in the breeze as I read my book. Add a few cushions for extra comfort and style! Yes please.
Dania Occasional Chair by Satara – We all need a place to have our morning coffee or afternoon glass of wine. The best thing for functionality and an outdoor relaxed retreat is two occasional chairs and a coffee table placed somewhere out of the high traffic zone of the family, yet close enough to be part of the action. The Dania design by Satara is my favourite. A little bit classic, a little bit contemporary and a whole lot of stylish. It instantly transports you back in time when life was less complicated and certainly more relaxed. These chairs are handcrafted from natural rattan and are just stunning.
Palm Springs Day Bed by Canvas & Sassoon – Who doesn’t want beach side comfort with a relaxed and easy feel. That is exactly why a day bed is perfect for lounging outside. This day bed is iron framed with a lacquered rattan finish which means it needs to be undercover but put in the shade overlooking the pool is perfect!
Skal Outdoor Sofa by Satara – Now this one looks great indoors or out. It is made of weather synthetic wicker and is a statement designer piece! I call it the outdoor love seat as it fits 2 perfectly! This definitely will bring your indoors, outdoors!
Haku Occasional Chair by MRD Home – This rattan beauty (steel inner frame) is new to the MRD collection, look at the silloutette on this chair! This is one stylish chair!
Outdoor Floor Rug- Marco Weave by Tribe Home – Talking weave, one other great addition to your outdoor living area is an outdoor rug and the Marco Weave by Tribe Home is perfect for indoors and out and the best thing is its great for high traffic and high spillage areas (my home!). It is low maintenance and weather resistant.
One thing you do need to bear in mind though, is rattan and wicker are natural products and therefore do need to be protected from the harsh Australian environment, so it is encouraged that you do keep them undercover. You can however get great looking woven outdoor furniture that provides the rattan vibe but is using synthetic weave, just like the Skal Sofa by Satara mentioned above. Their Babylon dining chairs are also stunners and are all weather synthetic weave and come in 4 different colours!
